The California coast is one of my favorite places. The tide pools, creatures and the scenery are all so special. That being said, at any beach in the world you’re bound to find plastics and a lot of it. In this piece you’ll see some beautiful shells and neat things I’ve found at the beach but there is a contrast in the piece too, the plastic underside of a bottle cap. The juxtaposition of these elements set against pigmented clay shows how these objects are so entangled in today’s world. The thought-provoking beauty is a plea to reconsider our disturbing contribution to land and sea.

18” x 24” Clay plaster, seaweed, coralline algae, shells, earth pigment, found objects on clay board
